Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was born in Germany; grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts; returned to Germany for four years to study painting; and came back to the United States to paint.  His specialty was spectacular mountain scenery.  He painted from photos.

​​Thomas Eakins (1844-1916): Realism was natural for pragmatic Americans. His most famous paintings were of boat racers.  He was a master of many genres.  He is famous for Agnew Clinic, a paint of a surgical operation.

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) is probably the greatest artist from the Barbizon school.  He started as a naturalistic pointer but around 1850,  Corot changed  his paintings became poetic.  He suffused them with soft radiance, like sunlight muted by mist)

Francis Goya (1746-1828) was a great Spanish painter.  He grew up absorbing Enlightenment ideals.  Charles IV reignited the fires of the inquisition.  Goya attacked the regime with a series of etchings of people being tortured "for having been born a Jew, etc.  The Queen gave him a job as court painter the same year (1799).  Napoleon suppressed  the inquisition's reign of terror.  Their was an insurrection which the French suppressed and executed the insurrectionists.  Goya painted the executions.
