ANDRE DERAIN:  Honere Derainn and Matisse founded Fauvim in 1905 while painting together in the seaside town of Collioure in southwestern France.  Fauvism uses loud colors and flat surface.  They exhibited for the first time at the 1905 Autumn Salon in Paris. The movement lastedd only three years.

Everett Millais (1829-1896) was one of three British art students who launched the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.    The name was chosen of a reminder of how all of Raphael's got art wrong by making it too stylized and artificial.  Like the French Realists they chose to paint nature as she is.

EDGAR DEGAS: Edward Degas after meeting Impressionists in 1860's  turned his attention to painting horse racing events, then ballet and theater scenes.  His most famous works are ballerina rehearsing, stretching, scratching and occasionally dancing.

ERNEST LUDWIG KIRCHNER: German Expressionism sprang up at the same time the Fauves staged their first exhibition in France.  Kirchner was a member of Die Brucke founded in 1905 in Dresden. Many of his most famous paintings are of seamy Berlin street life.
